WHAT ARE OZONE GENERATORS?

Today, we’re going to clear up some of the mystery behind ozone generators. Most people have heard of them, but what are they, and how do they work?

Ozone generators are ozone-generating machines that purposefully puts out ozone gas. Although the claims are false, they are marketed are safe and effective air purifiers for the indoors. Ionizers are another device that produces ozone, albeit as a byproduct and not intentionally. They were relatively popular and were used to clean the air and eliminate odors in people’s homes. In the spring of 2005, however, Consumer Reports Magazine revealed that these units were likely doing more harm than good, as several of these devices had the ability to produce harmful levels of ozone. The federal government took on a stricter regulation process for any purifier that produced ozone, regardless of whether this ozone production was intentional or not. No federal agency has approved the use of ozone generators in occupied spaces.

Ozone generators produce ozone by breaking apart oxygen molecules into single atoms. Those single atoms then attach to other oxygen molecules in the air to create ozone. This is accomplished in either two ways:

  1. 1. Silent corona discharge, wherein the machine uses electric discharge to produce ozone by splitting the normal oxygen molecules in the air to create ozone or O3.
  1. Ultraviolet radiation, in which the production of ozone is similar to the manner in which the sun’s ultraviolet radiation splits O2 to form individual oxygen atoms. InterNACHI considers this process to be less efficient than corona discharge.

In summary, ozone generators are machines that are intended to purify and clean the air but actually cause harm.
